Character Name: Frau
Character Series: 07 Ghost
Age: Unknown. Most likely older than he looks. He looks like he’s in his mid-twenties.
Background:

The plot of 07 Ghosts takes place in a fantasy world with different laws, creatures and powers called Barsburg Empire. The land is divided in 7 districts. The 7th district is where the churches are located. This is known as a sanctuary place that will take in anyone, no matter who they are – be it criminals, poor people or even runaway slaves. The military forces from the Barsburg Empire have great power but even they can’t openly oppose the church.

The religious aspect of this world is quite complex. The Chief of Heaven (God) allows a soul that is about to be reincarnated three wishes during their life. Once those wishes are complete they return to Heaven or are reincarnated again. Of course the person that is reborn never remembers what those wishes are. Also taking into account their actions during their lives they can either reincarnate as a human again or not. Those that have sinned too much (but not that much that they end up in Hell) aren’t allowed to reincarnate as humans. The examples of reincarnation seen in the manga are that of an animal and a tree.

According to a myth the God of Death Verloren killed the Chief of Heaven’s daughter and fled to earth. Thus the hearts of people were invaded by darkness and despair. The Chief of Heaven sent the Seven Ghosts after him, said to have been created from a part of him. The Seven Ghosts managed to defeat him and seal him away. However they were unable to return to Heaven and reincarnated as humans so they could keep their watch over the earth. They are said to be the guardians of the Empire and there are seven statues of them in the 7th district. No one is allowed to have contact with them and anyone who finds out the true identity of any of the Ghosts has their minds erased.

But Verloren’s threat didn’t end here. His messengers, Kor, remained free to collect people’s souls and drag them into darkness. These messengers will grant three wishes to people and in return will take over their soul. The people affected by Kor are said to have Verloren’s Curse. This curse can be lifted by priests using healing zaiphon or through the defeat of the Kor inside the human. A Kor can only be harmed by zaiphon from a normal person if it’s cast through a bascule. If a Kor is defeated the human soul is freed and can go to Heaven. The Kor who do manage to grant the three wishes and take possession of a human’s body are called Wars. They’re relatively more powerful than Kor. Wars can be controlled by a distance through black magic. The black magic users are called Warsfeil.

In this world people can use a magic called zaiphon. This magic is deeply related to their feelings and takes the form of words. There are three types of zaiphon: attack, healing and manipulation. The first two are the more common types. One who can use healing zaiphon can heal others from all kinds of ailments and can also share their magic power if they choose to. The manipulation type is a quite rare one and we only see Castor use it (one of the Seven Ghosts).

Backtracking to the world History, there was a terrible war between the Barsburg Empire and the Raggs Kingdom some years ago. The story told to everyone is that Raggs Kingdom broke the Peace Treaty and stole Pandora’s Box, where Verloren is said to be kept. Because of this Verloren was released from his prison, threatening to plunge the whole world in darkness. In truth, what happened was that Pandora’s Box is actually Teito Klein. He was the prince of the Raggs Kingdom, Wahrheit Tiashe Raggs. Because he was an illegitimate son the queen despised him so she made a deal with the Pope, who sealed Verloren in him against his father’s knowledge. Upon discovering this, Fea Kreuz (Teito’s uncle and one of the seven ghosts, Vertrag) escaped with him, thus being branded a traitor and excommunicated from the church. So that Teito wouldn’t become corrupted by the evil that is Verloren’s body sealed in him, the king made him the vessel for the Eye of Mikhail. The Eye of Mikhail is an object that can be infused into one’s body that channels the archangel Mikhail. When the military forces invade their home Fia Kreuz seals Teito’s memories so that no one founds out who he truly is and that he possesses the Eye of Mikhail. He is then killed by Ayanami (who is the vessel for Verloren’s soul).

The war brought upon many casualties and one of them was Frau. He was brought into the 7th district by the bishop Bastien. He was a war orphan, having lost all his friends. Because of this he was a rebellious child, never believing in God and opposing to all the teachings. However, slowly, Bastien won over his heart, caring for him like a father for a son. Despite his apparent uncaring attitude Frau would often sneak out of the church at night to help those cursed by Kor, even though that’s a task that only bishops should be able to perform. He always possessed great zaiphon, being the one that holds the highest score for the priest examination so far and was said to be a child blessed by God.

Even now Frau appears to have disdain about the ways of the church and God. He breaks all the rules he can, especially the ones regarding celibacy as he tends to hide porn magazines in various volumes in the library. He never seems to worry much about things, also shown upon the time of his examination – he only started studying three months prior to the exam. He also failed the exam twice (together with Castor) and that’s one of the reasons their relationship is so strained most of the times.

It is unknown how and when Frau died. He is the Seven Ghost Zehel. He possesses the ability to sever people’s ties with misfortune and is the only person capable of using Verloren’s scythe. How he obtained it is also a mystery but it always angers any Wars he encounters that he’s using their master’s weapon to defeat them. Because the scythe is evil in nature it sometimes rebels against his will and more often than not will try to attack Teito on its own, probably because he is the vessel for Verloren’s body or, like it has been said by Frau and Castor, because he has a pure soul.

Eventually it’s revealed that bishop Bastien was Ayanami’s spy and a Warsfeil. He used black magic to kill the criminals that had been accepted by the church. Despite being an enemy, it seems his feelings for Frau were sincere. Frau kills him and it’s assumed he reincarnates as a sprout, which Frau plants by a huge tree in the gardens where he and Bastien used to sit and talk.

After Teito’s successfully completed his examination to be a priest the church is invaded by the military forces who are using the Eye of Mikhail as an excuse to do so. Because he had been contaminated by a Wars during the fight with Bastien, the Eye of Mikhail is forced to leave Teito. The Eye is then captured by the military while Teito is rescued by Frau. After this they’re forced to start a journey since Ayanami knows where Teito is now. Teito and Frau have to stay together because of a blood contract Frau accidentally made with a slave collar put on Teito by Ayanami. He can have three controls over him: bind, pain or sleep. He’s used the sleep one a few times now. If they get separated over 48 hours the collar explodes.

Teito decides to start a journey to find the Land of Seele and needs the blessing from the 7 district Houses to do so. Along their journey Teito rescues a slave child, Capella. It is also revealed during their journey that Frau eats souls that are beyond salvation as a means to placate Verloren’s scythe. However he still fights against its temptations, because he still hasn’t forgotten his own soul.
They eventually reach the 5th district, Raggs Kingdom, where they learn that Teito is Pandora’s Box. Teito then asks Frau to kill him if it ever seems like Verloren is going to reincarnate. I will be taking him after this chapter, 44.

Personality:

Frau is one of those characters whose immediate façade isn’t quite the real one. He may come up as carefree, ruthless, pervert and uncaring but that’s just his outer demeanour, how he presents himself to the world. In truth, he cares about other people and perhaps a bit too much. As a child he would sneak out of the church to help those cursed by the Kor. Not to seek his own salvation, but because he wanted them to be happy once again – as he told Bastian.

He isn’t much of a God believer but that doesn’t mean he’s less worthy than other bishops. He simply believes in things his own way. It’s not that he doesn’t believe in His existence, rathers questions His judgement over everything and, specifically, life and death. Actually if we think about it he seems to be angry with God, which is quite possible taking into account his past. The fact that he’s a Ghost doesn’t seem to interfere with his faith – or lack of it.

He seems to become infatuated with Teito. He’s the first one to notice his pure soul and the fact Teito’s personality reminds him of himself when he was younger contributes to his sympathy for the younger boy. According to his words, Teito is Frau’s light - his only hope to save himself. Their meeting was fateful since Frau carries Verloren’s scythe and Teito is the vessel for his body. The scythe, having a will of its own, tries to attack Teito. When that fails it keeps tempting Frau towards him, messing with his mind. Frau has to struggle to keep control over himself. He has to have quite a strong will to control such a dark item.

That being said of course Frau also has a playful side to himself. He enjoys mundane things like eating and reading porn. He can be quite the lady’s man and he’s not embarrassed at all to show it. The fact that he’s dead only contributes to this – it seems like he’s struggling to feel alive once again and due to Verloren’s scythe his burden is much heavier than that of the other Ghosts. He also likes to feel thrilled, like when he rides the hawkziles, for instance. Despite popular belief he’s not as stupid as he looks, as he knows exactly well where he hides his porn – which is quite a feat taking into account the sheer size of the church’s library.

His friendship with Castor is also part of that playful act. Of course Castor might be tired of putting up with him after all those years but the fact is he plays along and lets Castor hit him when he could very well dodge or walk away. It’s all part of their brotherly relationship.

He’s also kind to the orphans of the church, who don’t fear him at all and find his height amusing. It’s possible that he sympathises with them because he’s also an orphan.

All fun and games end whenever he’s fighting. He takes his duty as a Ghost seriously and he abhors the evil beings that are Verloren’s minions. He’s always glad to save one more soul and is ruthless to the dark beings and also to the souls that are so tainted by the darkness that can’t be saved, not even by one of the Seven Ghosts. He can empathise quite easily but he can also be ruthless and unforgiving. He’s taken upon himself the task of protecting Teito, who is quickly becoming his most important person after Bastian’s death.

He enjoys riling up Teito, calling him brat, cry-baby and making fun of his short height.

Trivia:

- because he’s dead he sleeps in a coffin (the exact reason isn’t explained)
- his body is always cold to the touch but it can retain heat from baths the next hour or so. So it’s assumed by Teito he loves baths.
- Again, because he’s dead, his body tends to freeze over if he’s not careful (my theory as to why he has to sleep in a coffin)
- He doesn’t sleep much since he spends the nights hunting Kor and he has duties to tend to during the day (though I’m willing to bet he’d sleep in if he could)
- Despite him being dead, he can still eat – something he takes full advantage of.
- He can separate his conciousness from his body (that’s how he goes to Teito’s aid most of the times as Zehel)
- Normal people aren’t supposed to be able to see the Ghosts’ true forms and neither their weapons.
- The Ghosts are able to see the colors of souls.

Item Lost: Uh after much consideration (and also because he doesn’t have anything else of much importance) I’ll go for the scythe. Because it would make him too powerful and, more important he’d need to eat souls to keep it under control. Also, due to his memory loss, I don’t think he’d be able to control it.
